The pineapple was a rare and expensive fruit in the colonies, and symbolized the spirit of hospitality. As such, it was a popular and recurring design motif in eighteenth century decorative arts.
During the 18th century, needlework was an important part of a young girl's education as well as a means of expression. Girls would have been trained at home or school from a very young age. Visit the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg to see many examples of of needlework in our collections.
