Inspiration
Eighteenth-century striped and checked textiles from the collections of The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation provide the inspiration for this rug. Woven checks were common in textiles, especially linens, during the 18th century. They were used in clothing and housewares, and varied in scale and color. The most common were those made with two colors of yarn. Simple checks could be woven quickly (by 18th-century standards), were economical, and hard-wearing. Today, you can see woven check fabrics being made by our historic tradespeople at the Weaver's Shop in Colonial Williamsburg's restored Historic Area.
