Inspiration
Tobacco, the "intoxicating vegetable," was one of Virginia's most important cash crops in the colonial period. The early prosperity of the colony depended largely on the growth and sale of the plant that John Rolfe learned in 1612 could be raised for the English market. Every new fashion led to new products, and the popularity of tobacco resulted in a proliferation of storage containers. There were personal tobacco boxes that a gentleman could carry in his pocket, larger ones that were kept at home, and jars, like the ones that inspired this ornament, which the storekeeper kept filled with his patrons' favorite blends.
