Inspiration
The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg collections include numerous examples of delft pottery.
The curators note, "Earthenware coated with a lead-glaze that contains tin oxide was commonly known as delft in the 18th century. The majority of delft used in America was produced in England rather than Holland. Aesthetically it had more in common with Chinese porcelain than with other European Earthenware, and it often closely mimicked Asian designs. Imported English delft was found throughout the Chesapeake and used everywhere from gentry dining rooms to apothecary shops."
Visit the museum in person or explore our digital collections online. You can also spot reproduction delft china in our Apothecary trade shop in the historic area.
