Inspiration
Georg Dionysius Ehret was the most distinguished botanical artist of the 18th century. He is said to have traveled three miles daily to sketch this magnolia at every stage, from bud to full bloom. His intention "to publish a perfect botanical study" of the magnolia is certainly fulfilled in this exquisite masterpiece. This pillow is inspired by the watercolor sketch in Colonial Williamsburg's archives (object #1991-581,A&B). See the original sketch in our Digital Museum here.
