Candles were the primary source of lighting in Virginia homes in the 18th century. Candlemakers frequently went to some trouble to collect and refine the materials they used to make candles and soap. Candlemakers render tallow, refine and clean tallow and wax, and make candles by the processes of dipping and molding. Beeswax candles are most commonly made in warm weather. In cooler seasons, tallow and bayberry wax are used.
