Inspiration
A skirt panel fragment in our collections is the inspiration behind this reproduction 18th century fabric. (Object #1991-447). The original was made in India for export to the west. Learn more about this object in our online collections and be sure to visit the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg to see our textile collections in person.
Sustainability and Quality
We are very excited to be a part of the movement to make fabric production a safer and cleaner process for the planet and people. We are transitioning our reproduction fabrics over to a digitally printed process that is less impactful to the environment and is free of harmful chemicals. Our new digitally printed fabric meets OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 (look-up label #7099CIT). Learn more about this standard on the Oeko-Tex website.
We have worked closely with the same fabric mill that has always made our reproduction fabrics to assure our new digital prints retain the quality you have come to expect from the Colonial Williamsburg reproduction fabric line. Our digitally-printed fabrics are printed with fiber-reactive dyes - not pigments - and finished using the same process as our traditionally printed fabrics to assure colorfastness and minimize shrinkage. Our 100% cotton fabrics have a soft hand and drape and are lightweight. See the side-by-side photo of the traditionally printed fabric and the new digitally printed fabric above for comparison.

Great value replica
I purchased this fabric to make a reproduction 18th-century men's banyan. This fabric is a great value for the cost. The cotton is very nice with a fine, even weave, and the weight is similar to a decent-quality cotton bedsheet (closer to a medium weight). After searching for a long time for the perfect hand block printed cotton with an appropriate 18th century design and coming up emptyhanded, I decided to give this digitally printed fabric a try. It is based on an original document so the colors and design are correct. However, the digital printing process leaves the design a little fuzzy, not pixelated, but slightly blurry-- this is only apparent up close and not noticeable from 5+ feet away. That's the only reason I didn't give this fabric a 5 star rating. If you're looking for a near-perfect copy of an 18th century printed Indian cotton, this isn't quite it. But you're also probably not going to find something better in this price range. Overall, this fabric is a great value and I would recommend it for historical costuming uses.

Amazing reproduction chintz!!
I *LOVE* this fabric!! It is the most beautiful cotton chintz reproduction fabric. I made a 1790's open robe from this. The gown was mostly machine sewn with hand sewn hem and finishing touches. It sewed up so nice both ways! I plan on ordering this again soon to make a late 18th century jacket :)
