In his 1633 book The Great Herball, John Gerard described the distilled water of lavender as "virtuous," whether it be "smelt unto or the temples and forehead bathed therewith." Gardeners of the 17th and 18th centuries relied heavily on herbalists such as Gerard, who also noted lavender's usefulness in perfuming linen, apparel, gloves, and leather. Known for its calming scent, lavender was often worn in one's hat to prevent headacheseven among Revolutionary soldiers!
