Inspiration
This candle holder is inspired by the chinoiserie style, which European manufacturers developed as a lower-cost export for the American colonies. European manufacturers roughly copied designs from more refined, delicate Chinese originals. The imported pieces were popular in 18th-century Williamsburg, as shown by contemporary newspaper advertisements from merchants selling their wares. Colonial Williamsburg's collections include numerous examples of chinoiserie imports.
