The Grand Union Flag, also known as the Continental Colors, served as the first national flag of the United States from 1775 to 1777. Its design featured the British Union Jack in the canton (the upper corner nearest the flagpole) and thirteen alternating red and white stripes, representing the thirteen colonies. The flag symbolized the colonists' complex position at the beginning of the Revolution, as they sought a unified identity while still considering themselves British subjects.
