Inspiration
Magnolia trees were thriving in Virginia and the eastern United States before the first colonist arrived. Explorers were astonished by their first glimpse of this enormous, unusual tree with its fragrant giant blossoms. Magnolias continue to make a grand presence throughout Colonial Williamsburg's Historic Area. The west elevation of the Lightfoot House is adorned with a beautifully espaliered southern magnolia—the finest example of this unique pruning technique in Williamsburg.
