Inspiration
George Wythe was a citizen of the Enlightenment, deeply interested in politics, history, and science, and a respected thought leader in early America. Wythe was Virginia's first law professor at the College of William & Mary, a chancery judge, and a signer of the Declaration of Independence, among many other prominent positions he held throughout his life. In 1768, he wrote to John Norton in London to procure a "...handsome well built chariot, with the device now sent [arms] painted on it..." The George Wythe coat of arms includes demi-griffins, mythical beasts featuring the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion, symbolizing courage, leadership, intelligence, and strength. Today, the seal can be seen on the George Wythe Carriage at Colonial Williamsburg, which visitors can hire for rides through the historic area.
