Inspiration
The distinctive yellow, horse-drawn Wythe Carriage inspired the 2027 Colonial Williamsburg Jefferson Cup. Carriages were part of Williamsburg's 18th-century street scene. Tavern keepers rented them, and prominent residents owned them. Like other colonial gentry (such as Robert Carter Nicholas, John Randolph, and Benjamin Waller), George Wythe owned horses and riding vehicles for travel, even ordering a custom "post-chariott" from London merchants in 1768.
Today, visitors to Colonial Williamsburg can take a carriage ride through the Historic Area, offering an immersive glimpse into daily 18th-century life.
