An indispensable part of tavern life, stoneware mugs with cobalt blue designs were the usual vessels for beer and ale in the 18th century. So many shards have been found at colonial tavern sites in Williamsburg that reconstructed taverns now use reproduction versions to continue the custom. Inspiration
This exquisitely detailed fox is similar to one from a 1771 edition of a book by 18th-century explorer and naturalist Mark Catesby. The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands is part of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation collections. The book provides one of the most complete records of colonial American flora and fauna.
