Inspiration
Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) first came to Williamsburg early in 1760 to study at the College of William & Mary. In 1765, Jefferson witnessed Patrick Henry's brilliant orations against the Stamp Act from a doorway in the Capitol building in Williamsburg. Four years later, he returned to the House of Burgesses. In 1775 and 1776, he represented Virginia in the Continental Congress, where he helped draft the Declaration of Independence. He lived in Williamsburg for twenty years until he helped to move the capital to Richmond, Virginia, in 1780. Jefferson served as the nation's first U.S. secretary of state under George Washington, as the nation's second vice president under John Adams, and as the third President of the United States, serving from 1801 to 1809.
