Colonial Williamsburg's household accessories collection includes a diverse array of forms ranging from 17th-century tortoiseshell dressing caskets to 18th-century mouse traps. The collection is focused primarily on utilitarian objects that would have been found in British and American homes of the period, including bed warmers, baskets, walking sticks, spectacles, document boxes, trunks, writing equipment, pipe boxes, and dressing accessories, among others. Many of the works in the collection are on view in the Foundation's historic buildings. In celebration of 18th-century spectacles, these sunglasses are reproduced as part of a joint venture with the Monticello Foundation collections.
Eighteenth-century spectacles did not have curved earpieces to hold the eyeglasses in place. A ribbon tied through loops were tied behind the wearer's head to secure the spectacles.
