This little rascal is dressed to impress in 18th-century style. Captured here as a charming collectible Christmas ornament, the raccoon was one of the many species documented by naturalists in the New World. This fellow wears a tricorn or "cocked" hat. Popular during the 18th century for both civilian dress and military and naval uniforms, the hat's distinguishing characteristic was practical: the turned-up portions of the brim formed gutters that directed rainwater away from the wearer's face, depositing most of it over the wearer's shoulders. This beautifully detailed ornament is hand-painted on high-fired porcelain. Makes a wonderful holiday gift or addition to your tree-trimming collection.

Inspiration
This exquisitely detailed raccoon is similar to one from a 1771 edition of a book by 18th-century explorer and naturalist Mark Catesby. The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands is a part of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation collections. The book provides one of the most complete records of flora and fauna from colonial America.
