Inspiration
Our sapphire crystal jewelry collection was inspired by a c. 1763 portrait of Anne Fairchild Bowler (Mrs. Metcalf Bowler) by artist John Singleton Copley, currently in the collections of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. The painting features an elegantly dressed 18th-century woman wearing a large blue sapphire pendant. The necklace worn by our gentle lady could have been made with genuine sapphires, or it may have been "paste" jewelry. Paste jewelry was made with glass or crystal stones set in a foil backing. These faux pieces glistened beautifully in the candlelight, just like real sapphires, only at a more affordable price.
