Object of the Game
Fox & Geese is a game of "inequality" for two players. The object of the Fox is to capture the geese until it becomes impossible for them to trap him. The object of the Geese is to trap the Fox by hemming him in so that there is no move for the Fox. The Fox wins when the Geese are reduced to two pieces. The Geese win when the Fox is unable to make a legal move.
Origins of the Game
Fox & Geese is a descendant of a game called Tafl, or Table, which is played on a cross-shaped board. Hala-Tafl, the Fox game, is believed to have originated in Icelandic folklore around 1300 AD. An early reference to the game of Fox & Geese is found in the Royal Household of Edward IV around 1470 AD. Early settlers of America continued to play this game in the New World on the ground or with carved wood and pebbles.
